Stars Maritime Academy has banned students of the institution from wearing blue rig, a move which according to the school, is aimed at stopping the usual controversy between students of the school and officer of the Nigerian Navy.
The Rector of the school, Dr. Reuben Ovai, who said this recently in a chat with Shipping Position Daily at the school in Ota, Ogun state also said that 80% of the grandaunts of the school are gainfully employed in various maritime establishments.
Explaining further, he said that the school management only give students white and blue shirts which distinguishes them from the officer of the Nigerian Navy, even as he warned that any student caught with blue rig is on his own and will be dealt with by the school.
“I have been visited by a team of the Nigerian Navy officers and we sat down and discussed. It is true that we know we are dealing with the public and you see you can’t predict the heart of a man when he is on his own”
Ovai said that they also give the student Merchant Navy berets and not that of the Navy.
“So you can’t tell what these people can do outside the school environment and that is why we have taken a decision in this school not to give anybody Blue rig used by the Navy, we have stopped issuing students the blue rig. We give them the white and blue shirt which distinguishes them from the Nigerian Navy”
“So, the parameter is totally different, even if we are giving you a cap, we give you a Merchant Navy cap and not a Nigerian Navy cap. So whoever that is caught with a Nigerian Navy dressing is on his own, even the school will not be happy with such a person and the school will deal with such a person seriously”, he warned.
According to him, “About 80% of my grandaunts are gainfully employed. Because sometime I am surprised when I asked about someone who graduated from here I would be told that he is at so and so place, at least I am not disappointed in what I am doing”
He added that 80% of the current intakes in the school were referred to the school by ex-students of the academy.
“And most of the new intakes I had were referred to the school by grandaunts from the school. 80% of the new intakes were referred by the ex-students of the school”, he concluded.
