The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Friday restated its zero tolerance for night transportation of petroleum products.
Mr Adebayo Atanda, the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the union, made the assertion in Lagos at the ongoing training programme for tanker drivers.
Atanda said that the union would not hesitate to deal decisively with any of its members that goes against the order.
He said that a task force set up by Alhaji Salimon Oladiti, National President of the union, has power to deal with any driver caught carrying the products at night.
“We have heard reports that some of our drivers were defying the order that forbids travelling at night.
“It is dangerous to travel in the night with petroleum products because armed robbers operate in the night.
“Armed robbers are using the night to hijack tankers loaded with petrol and take it to unknown destination.
“We do not want our members to travel at night because we believe that vandals also operate in the night.
“If you load in the night, you have to wait till the day break before you move your tanker out,“ Atanda said.
Also, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, the South-West Chairman of NUPENG, urged the tanker drivers attending the training to make use of whatever they learn.
“You have come to school and you have learnt something, let this training be part and parcel of you when you are on the wheel.
“We have brought all the agencies you meet on the roads daily here so that you can get familiar with them.
“They are on the road to protect you; they are not your enemies. When you drive according to the law of the land, they will not stop you.
“Count yourselves lucky to be members of NUPENG, because we are the most powerful union in the country today,” Korodo said.
Resource persons at the training include: Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE).
They are: Lagos State Fire Brigade, Federal Roads Safety Corps and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
