The Ogun state Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has said that there is a significant drop in smuggling activities within its jurisdiction and a sharp drop in seizures.

This was contained in a statement sent to Shipping Position Daily by the command's Public Relations Officer, Mr Usman Abubakar.

The statement quoted the command controller; Comptroller Mahmud Haruna as saying in Abeokuta, Ogun State that command made impressive seizures in the first four months of 2015.

The comptroller said that the drop in seizures was as a result of the enhanced vigour with which the anti-smuggling campaign has been carried out since the beginning of the year.

Haruna noted that during the period under review, the command collected N2,356,937,173.89 as against  the N1,985,420,606.16 collected same period in 2014, with a difference of N371,516,567.73

In the period, the command also recorded 361 seizures with Duty Paid Value (DPV) N319,967,326.00, as against 485 seizures with DPV of N508,942,136.00 made same period in 2014, which indicates a sharp drop of smuggling activities in the region.

"In the anti-smuggling operations, the command made 361 seizures with DPV of N319,967,326.00 as against 485 seizures with DPV of N508,942,136.00 made same period in 2014. "

"This shows a decrease of 124 seizures with DPV N188,974,810.00; the decrease in seizures was as a result of the enhanced vigor with which the anti-smuggling campaign has been carried out since the beginning of the year."

The statement further stated that the command handed over 359 parcels and 90 sacks Indian hemp to Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), weighing 1,259kg.

According to the spokesperson, the seizures were made possible because of the command's unrelenting operatives along Imeko axis in the state.

He assured that “the command is not relenting in its anti-smuggling drive and we shall pursue it with more vigor and determination in order to reduce the incidence of smuggling to the barest minimum in Ogun state and its environs."
