A Nigerian student in Diaspora, Cadet Bamuza Joshua Ayaogbo, who is studying Bs. Marine transportation (Nautical Science) in a maritime academy in the Philippines under the Nigeria Seafarers Development Programme has commended the former President; Goodluck Jonathan for the various maritime capacity development programmes that were encouraged under him.

The statement, which was sighted by our correspondent read: “I am very enthusiastic for this youth development initiative by the ex-president DR. Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan to enhance the standard of the maritime sector in the country. At the same time, I want to appreciate the industrious effort of the Director General of Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi, the ex-minister of Transportation Senator Idris Umar and the coordinator of the Nigeria Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) Mrs. Irene Macfoy for their impacts to make this epoch programme come to reality.”
He acknowledged that the aim of the NSDP is “to train and develop youths to become competent seafarers that will be in-charge of the Nigeria maritime Industry.”
The cadet however underscored the need for sea time experience after the training of the NSDP beneficiaries in the various academies overseas.
“I’m very optimistic that, the agency (NIMASA) and the Federal Government have a good and greater plan for us as regards our one year onboard cadet-ship training, because without that we haven’t accomplished our various maritime courses and that is the most essential aspect of this profession and in other for us to obtain the Certificate of Competency (COC) as required by the International Maritime Organization (IMO)”, he stated.
