The Comptroller-General of Customs, Alhaji Dikko Abdullahi, on Thursday said electronics being assembled in Nigeria could now be exported to Benin Republic.
Abdullahi disclosed this at the bilateral meeting between the Nigeria Customs Service and Republic of Benin Customs in Abuja.
“I think Nigerians are aware that Nigeria allows assemblers to bring in semi knocked down electronics to be coupled in Nigeria. They are not regarded as imported electronics that cannot be exported.
“The electronics assembled in Nigeria are now allowed to be exported to Republic of Benin,’’ Abdullahi said.
He said the two countries were working together to move cargo and facilitate trade forward within the borders.
Abdullahi announced the donation of five pick-ups van to Republic of Benin customs to enhance its operations in escorting cargo from the seaports to Nigeria border.
“We know the responsibility of escorting our cargo from your seaport to our border, I thereby, on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, donate five pick-ups van to Republic of Benin customs.
“I believe that the Federal Government will do more to assist our sister country in term of equipment and logistic,’’ he said.
Earlier, The Director-General of Customs, Republic of Benin, Mr Charles Sezan, said he was in Nigeria to discuss matter of common interest.
Sezan said security issues were some of the challenges facing the two countries, adding that Ngeria and Republic of Benin should collaborate to tackle it.
He assured that the customs in the Republic of Benin would cooperate with Nigerian government, adding, “I promise that as soon as we get the import prohibition list from Nigeria, we will comply immediately and block all leakages.''
