In the Gulf of Aden, seven pirates bit off more than they could chew
when they attempted to board a German ship that turned out to be the German Navy’s FGS SPESSART, which is attached to the NATO fleet operating on anti-pirate patrols in the region.
After the pirates opened fire on the supply ship to try and force it to stop the German ship returned the fire while helicopter support was summonsed from nearby Dutch and Spanish warships. The would-be pirates were taken into custody and transferred to another German ship, the frigate FGS RHEINLAND–PFALZ for questioning.
The attack took place about 85 n.miles from the Somali port of Bosaso.
