Dockworkers in the maritime industry under the aegis of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have accused downstream operators, especially the petroleum tank farms, of sabotaging dockworkers and deliberately fencing them out of downstream operations.
President of the dockworkers branch of the union; Comrade Adewale Adeyanju who spoke with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week alleged that many of the tank farms operate illegal businesses especially in the night which they do not want the dockworkers and the entire outside world to be aware of.

President of the dockworkers branch of the union; Comrade Adewale Adeyanju who spoke with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week alleged that many of the tank farms operate illegal businesses especially in the night which they do not want the dockworkers and the entire outside world to be aware of.
Adeyanju alleged that the tank farms have resulted to the use of people that are not registered with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) as the supervisory agency in charge of dock labor to do the jobs.
“The tank farm operators have denied dockworkers to work in their place, as I am talking to you we are having meeting with NIMASA over the issue, they denied us not to work and it has been problematic for the union, they bring in people that are not registered with NIMASA to come and do the job because of the illegal businesses they handle overnight” Adeyanju alleged.
Shipping Position Daily recalls that some of the dockworkers had last year stormed Ibru Tank Farms along Apapa-Oshodi Expressway by Warehouse Bus Stop to protest against non-payment of their severance package and unlawful termination of their appointments by Ibru Organization and 16 other stakeholders operating at the jetty.
The dockworkers had claimed that they were unlawfully disengaged after the port concession exercise.
