The first and only priority of the newly-elected members in the CRFFN Council should be the operational challenges of freight forwarders vis a vis government policy summersault.
Festus Ukwu (Secretary General, National Council)
The newly-elected governing council is to meet with the council objectives. I believe there are a set of objectives laid down which must be achieved by those in the council. Then stakeholders should not expect less.
Francis Omotoso (Registrar, NAGAFF Academy)
Their priority should be the objectives of the Council, which is to set standards for knowledge, engage all freight forwarders and make sure they train and equip them with the knowledge and everything they need to become good freight forwarders. To register freight forwarders who are well-trained. They cannot go out of the stipulated objective as contained in the Act that established the Council and it is specifically about training and retraining of freight forwarders.
Rev. Alex Nwokedi (National Financial Secretary, AREFFN)
We are not asking for much. Although the last regime did not perform optimally because some of them went with a different idea. I urge the newly-elected members to fight for the freight forwarders. They should not go into the council for their personal aggrandizement or pockets. They should represent all freight forwarders. Issues that concern freight forwarders should be addressed and see how they can align with other freight forwarders in order to find solutions.
Ojo Peter Akintoye (Clearing Agent)
Their priority should be the content of their framework and the reason why the Council is established. They should make sure they empower freight forwarders and sanitize grey areas in the port. They should also see how they can engage all freight forwarders through sensitization. Capacity building should not be left out too.
Frank Obiekezie (National Secretary, AREFFN)
Although the election was not an ideal one, the new council should ensure they have proper knowledge of who a freight forwarder is. They should sit down and identify the problems affecting freight forwarders and importers then fight for their interests. They should also create platforms for creating synergy with importers because they are the ones we are working for.
Pius Ujubuonu (Clearing Agent)
Those who are elected should be able to interpret the purpose for which they are elected. They should also be able to profile those who are under their regulatory purview. The Council members should come out with an actionable road map that will make us know they have understood the schedule of each councilor the council itself. For me, I guess they have just gone through the elections and are waiting to be given Hilux vehicles or other benefits of the council.
Stanley Ezenga (Former PRO, NAGAFF)
The job of the Council members is not to promulgate laws or policies, but to regulate freight forwarders. We have our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Ethics and Values. It is left for them to uphold these ethics and ensure nobody goes against the SOPs. Most freight forwarders don’t even know the SOPs. So they have a lot of work to do in terms of sensitization and education. Unfortunately, it is only people who know that can enforce it. So the work before them now is to ensure that all freight forwarders are brought up-to -speed with the current trends by the SOPs, so that they can fall in line with the operations.
