ANLCA Threatens Showdown With Terminal Operators Over Arbitrary Charges

For allegedly increasing some categories of charges collectable on goods imported into the country through their terminals, the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) has threatened to shut down all the nation’s seaports, unless the terminal operators enter into dialogue with the association.

The decision to descend on the terminal operators was reached at the end of the association’s meeting with members of its Board of Trustees, national executives as well as Chairmen and Secretaries of all the chapters in the western zone. The meeting took place on Tuesday.
A brief on proceedings at the meeting which was made available to Shipping Position Daily  revealed that the association agreed that a four-member committee comprising the secretary of Board of Trustees; Prince Taiye Oyeniyi, the Apapa  Chapter Chairman; Comrade John Ofobike, Chairman Tin Can Chapter; Mr Kayode Farinto Collins and secretary of the association’s  Presidential Compliance Committee; Chief Isdore Martins Agoha was constituted to inter face with  the Seaports Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN).
The group was reportedly specifically mandated to write to the chairman of STOAN; Princess Vicky Haastrup,” giving the association 72 hours to enter into dialogue with the ANLCA leadership to harmonize/resolve the issue, or be faced with a complete shutdown of the ports nationwide”.
It was also learnt that ANLCA’s decision to come against STOAN was based on the briefing it received from the Chairman of Tin Can Chapter; Farinto, which reportedly detailed arbitrary increase in terminal charges.
The association was said to have been miffed by the fact that the increase was introduced without prior notice to the importing public or stakeholders.
