The Centre for Marine Surveyors in Nigeria (CMSN) has inducted 40 new members into its professional body, alongside honouring outstanding graduating students at the completion of its Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) programme conducted in collaboration with the Niger Delta University.
The induction and award ceremony, held over the weekend in Lagos during a Students Luncheon for the Centre’s 2023 pioneer students, marked a significant milestone in efforts to deepen local capacity in marine surveying.
Speaking at the event, CMSN President, Engr. Akin Olaniyan, described the occasion as historic, noting that it celebrated the successful completion of the first cohort of the PGD programme and their transition into full professional membership.
He said the inductees are now part of a growing network committed to professionalism, integrity, and excellence in marine surveying, urging them to contribute meaningfully to the maritime sector.
Olaniyan also appreciated partners and stakeholders for their continued support, noting that their contributions have helped strengthen capacity development in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
Earlier, the Pioneer National Coordinator of CMSN, Capt. Dr. Fola Ojutalayo, explained that the Centre was established to address the dominance of foreigners in marine surveying jobs by training competent Nigerian professionals.
He disclosed that the PGD programme is currently the only one of its kind in West Africa, adding that it is designed to create employment opportunities, reduce capital flight, and boost the nation’s economy.
Ojutalayo assured the newly inducted members of job opportunities, stating that the Centre would facilitate professional engagements for them to apply their knowledge in practical settings.
Also speaking, the President of the Nigerian Association of Master Mariners and Council Member of the Centre, Capt. Tajudeen Alao, charged the inductees to uphold integrity and professionalism in their careers.
Capt Alao warned against unethical practices, recalling past incidents in the oil importation sector where false cargo declarations by compromised surveyors led to significant financial losses and economic risks.
According to him, the industry is yet to fully recover from such practices, stressing that well-trained professionals must distinguish themselves through honesty and adherence to ethical standards.
In his remarks, CMSN National Vice President, Engr. Cookey Iroegbu Anthony, highlighted the Centre’s objectives, which include expanding job opportunities for Nigerians across various areas such as wet and dry cargo surveying, underwater surveying, and port facility inspections.
He reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to continuous support for its members as they navigate their professional careers.
Among the award recipients, Akerele Olawale Olayinka emerged as the best male graduating student, while Lola Olabanjo was named best female graduating student.
In the distinction category, Ebikeme Apere and Isiayei Bereton Stevenson were recognised, while Sunday Olawale Paul received the Leadership Award. Lola Olabanjo and Uchacha Esther Biobele were also honoured in the outstanding female students category.
Highlights of the event included the formal induction of the new members, presentation of awards and cash prizes, issuance of professional certificates, and a networking session.
Some of the newly inducted members who spoke after the ceremony expressed optimism, noting that the training had already begun to open up career opportunities in their respective workplaces.
