The House of Representatives has passed for second reading, a Standards Organisation of Nigeria Act 2015 (Amendment) Bill which seeks to empower the quality assurance body to certify petroleum products imported into the country.
Sponsored by Messrs Sergius Ogun and Ganiyu Johnson, the legislation is titled, ‘A Bill for an Act to Amend the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Act to Provide for the Inclusion of a Representative from the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources in the Standards Council of Nigeria, and Expand the Scope and Functions of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to Include Investigation and Quality Assurance Certification of Petroleum Products; and for Related Matters.’

Leading the debate at the second reading, Ogun said, “This bill, when passed into law, will enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria in ensuring quality of products – especially petroleum products – and improving the fight against substandard or fake products in the country.”
The bill passed second reading about 10 months after the importation of adulterated PMS into Nigeria, which caused a disruption on the supply chain of the product in the country.
The batch, which was supplied under the Direct Sale-Direct Supply (oil swap) deal between the Federal Government and oil suppliers, was not tested for prohibited methanol at the point of entry.
