The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has thrown its weight behind the nationwide peaceful mass protest and rally announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
In a letter issued by the Central Working Committee (CWC) of MWUN and signed by Com. Erazua Oniha on behalf of the Secretary General, the union reaffirmed its solidarity with the NLC’s decision to take a stand against the Federal Government’s removal of subsidy from the pump price of Petroleum Motor Spirit.
The letter also affirmed that the MWUN acknowledged the pressing issue of the escalating cost of living affecting the Nigerian working class and citizens daily.
Explaining that with the seeming insensitivity of the government in addressing these concerns, the MWUN recognizes the necessity of raising their collective voice through peaceful protest and rally to bring attention to the plight of the people.
In response to the call for mobilization, the union issued a directive to all its members in ports, jetties, terminals, and Oil and Gas Platforms nationwide, including all the Districts and units, to actively participate in the protest scheduled to kick start on Wednesday, August 2, 2023
