MONDAY INTERVIEW:   “It is either the boats are overloaded, travel in the night or people travel without life jackets”— Mr Bola Oyebamiji

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has called on Nigerians to prioritize safety while navigating the nation’s inland waterways during the upcoming festive season.

In a statement issued by its management, the Authority stressed the importance of adhering to the Transportation Code, 2023, which has been officially gazetted and will be strictly enforced to ensure safer waterway operations.

NIWA emphasized the critical need for both boat operators and passengers to follow established safety protocols to avoid accidents. Operators have been specifically instructed to avoid overloading their vessels beyond approved capacities and to provide lifejackets to passengers at no cost. Additionally, the Authority has prohibited the consumption of alcohol and other banned substances by operators and passengers before or during boat rides.

Key measures outlined in the alert include the mandatory completion of passenger manifests before departure and the requirement for boat operators to conduct a safety briefing prior to any trip. Boat operations beyond 6:00 PM are strictly forbidden, and passengers are strongly discouraged from traveling on waterways after dark.

The Authority also warned against destabilizing activities onboard boats and emphasized that all passengers must wear lifejackets throughout their journeys. NIWA further declared that any assault or interference with its officers or Water Marshals while they are on duty will be met with strict penalties.

To enhance preparedness, NIWA has placed its operational bases on high alert for emergency response and has provided emergency contact numbers—07039748740 and 08059543364—for immediate assistance.

NIWA urged all waterway users to adhere to these guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure a safe festive season. The Authority reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining secure inland waterways for all Nigerians.
