The Managing Director Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Mohammed Bello-Koko has emphasized the strategic importance of the Port Community System (PCS), stating that it plays a pivotal role in enhancing efficiency and competitiveness within Nigerian ports.
Koko in his address at the International Customs Day 2024, which held on Friday in Lagos, credited the collaborative efforts between the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigerian Customs for the advancements made in the PCS.
He highlighted concrete results, such as the reduction in cargo dwell time and ship waiting time, which have led to the successful decongestion of ports.
He further underscored the PCS as a cornerstone for promoting efficiency in port operations and making Nigerian ports more competitive on the global stage. He revealed that the ongoing collaboration has propelled the PCS to its final consultancy phase, with technical guidance from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
According to Koko, the PCS not only facilitates streamlined port processes but also lays the groundwork for the National Single Window, a transformative initiative aimed at further enhancing operational efficiency.
He explained that the PCS’s strategic importance extends to the vision of the Lekki Deep Seaport, poised to become a transshipment hub serving the maritime needs of landlocked neighbors.
In conclusion, the Managing Director expressed his commendation for the collaborative efforts, particularly praising the Customs General (CG) and his team for their dedication to this shared vision. He assured stakeholders of the NPA’s unwavering commitment to advancing the Port Community System, driving efficiency, and ultimately contributing to the competitiveness and prosperity of Nigerian ports.
