The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has strongly condemned the brutal attack that resulted in the death of Customs Assistant II Auwal Haruna at the Gamji Makaho checkpoint in Katsina State on April 17, 2024.
The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, in a press statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer of the Service; Abdullahi Maiwada on Wednesday extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and colleagues of the fallen officer and assured that the NCS is working tirelessly to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face justice.
The CGC described the attack as “utterly unacceptable” and reiterated the Service’s commitment to combating smuggling and cross-border crimes.
He emphasized that the safety of NCS personnel and the security of Nigeria’s borders remain paramount and pledged to work with traditional rulers, government bodies, and sister agencies to combat the heinous crime.
He stated that intelligence suggests that some community members are harbouring suspected accomplices involved in the attack, and the NCS has urged these individuals to align with the law and refrain from condoning illegality.
The Service has also called on the public to join hands in the fight against smugglers and report suspicious activities to the nearest customs formation.
The NCS also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the law and protecting the interests of the Nigerian people, and with the support of the public, aims to create a safer environment for its officers and a more secure nation for all.
