Barge Carrier Knocks Over Gantry Crane at Port of Keelung in Taiwan

A barge carrier that was transporting three cranes accidentally knocked over a crane onshore. The onshore crane toppled over five containers in the port. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the accident

The incident occurred at 2:00 PM in the afternoon on 14 October. The barge carrier, YU ZHOU QI HANG, which was transporting three new bridge cranes to the west coast container terminal of the port, ended up getting too close to an old onshore crane that was awaiting replacement. One of the three cranes onboard the vessel knocked against the onshore crane and ended up toppling it over, leading to its collapse.

The cranes onboard the YU ZHOU QI HANG were owned by the China Container Terminal Corporation and were set to replace the old cranes in KEELUNG Port

The crane is reported to have collapsed on five containers at the port, four of which were reportedly empty. Due to the accident, Piers 20 and 21 will remain closed from 14 to 18 October. Although personnel were present in the port at the time of the accident, fortunately there were no injuries reported in the incident.

The damage incurred in the whole accident amounted to around $9.3 million.
