Liberian-flagged Crude Oil Tanker Causes Fuel Spill Off Istanbul
On 11th February, Turkey’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety (KEGM) reported a fuel leakage during the bunkering operation involving crude oil tanker JAG and oil product tanker GOKDENIZ. The incident occurred at Ahırkapı Anchorage, off the coast of Istanbul.
During refueling, an uncontrolled fuel discharge from the Liberian-flagged crude oil tanker JAG resulted in water contamination in the area.
KEGM deployed multiple vessels, including KEGM-3 and KEGM-4 lifeboats, an environmental barge, and a tugboat Mehmetcik, along with a rescue specialist, to contain the marine pollution. The cleanup efforts were swiftly carried out, and the water was cleared of contamination.
