The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun has commissioned 31 newly- acquired operational gunboats at the Nigeria Police Force Maritime Command Base in Ikoyi, Lagos, as part of efforts to enhance security on the nation’s waterways.

The commissioning ceremony marked a major advancement in the Police Force’s strategic push to tackle criminal activities along Nigeria’s inland waterways, backwaters, and coastal areas. The gunboats are equipped with advanced navigation and communication systems, alongside integrated solar-powered technology to enable precision patrols, efficient coordination, and eco-friendly policing operations.

Speaking at the event, Egbetokun described the acquisition as a “symbol of renewed commitment” to maritime safety, anti-crime patrols, and rescue operations. He noted that the deployment of the assets underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s drive for modernized and sustainable policing.

“These gunboats are not just vessels; they represent our unwavering resolve to protect Nigeria’s waterways, safeguard lives and property, and dismantle criminal networks,” Egbetokun said.

He further highlighted the environmental benefits of the boats’ solar-powered technology, describing the development as a step towards “green policing” in line with international standards.

Emphasizing the importance of collaboration, the IGP called for continued synergy between the Police, Armed Forces, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), and other maritime stakeholders to achieve lasting security on the nation’s waterways.

He also reiterated the value of intelligence-led policing and community engagement, pledging to work closely with coastal communities to foster trust and leverage local intelligence in crime prevention efforts.

The IGP expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly in terms of infrastructure development and modernization.

“Under Mr. President’s visionary leadership, the Nigeria Police is undergoing a transformation marked by reform, modernization, and professional excellence,” he said.
