NIWA Deepens Reforms, Engages ICPC On Integrity, Revenue Enhancement Drive

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has intensified efforts to reposition its operations through renewed institutional reforms and strategic engagement with anti-corruption stakeholders, as part of measures aimed at strengthening integrity and boosting revenue generation across the inland waterways sector.

Speaking at a post-event press conference at the Authority’s headquarters in Lokoja, the Acting Managing Director, Umar Yusuf Girei, disclosed that NIWA recently organised a two-day Executive and Anti-Corruption Training themed “Strengthening Integrity and Revenue System in Inland Waterways Management.”

According to him, the training brought together Board Members, Management Staff and Area Managers, alongside the 2026 NIWA Management Retreat held in Abuja. He explained that the initiative was designed to reinforce accountability frameworks, enhance transparency in revenue processes and align the Authority’s operations with global best practices in inland waterways administration.

Girei noted that the reform drive is in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and enjoys the support of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola. He emphasized that NIWA remains committed to aligning its institutional goals with the Federal Government’s broader objectives to ensure improved service delivery for Nigerians.

As part of its anti-corruption initiative, the Acting MD revealed that management held discussions with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to explore practical mechanisms for strengthening transparency and promoting ethical conduct within the Authority’s operations.

He assured staff that the ongoing reforms under his leadership would not only improve internal systems but also translate into better working conditions and enhanced operational efficiency.

“NIWA remains committed to continuous improvement and stakeholder engagement, and the reforms are expected to enhance both internal performance and public confidence,” Girei stated.

The development was contained in a statement signed by Suleiman Makama, AGM (Corporate Affairs).
