The Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has begun a three-day training programme for its newly promoted deputy comptrollers and assistant comptrollers of customs.
Addressing participants at the opening on Monday, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, Customs Area Controller of the Apapa Customs Command, urged participants to brace themselves for the responsibilities that accompany their new ranks.
According to him, the newly promoted Deputy Comptrollers (DC) session would focus on their functions as terminal heads to strengthen their leadership and oversight capacities.
He explained that the Assistant Comptrollers (AC) training would focus on their functions as releasing officers to ensure that they achieved the performance of their duties with due diligence.
Olomu said that the assistant Comptroller would be trained on facilitate lawful trade, prevent revenue leakages as well as the import or export of prohibited items.
Apapa Customs head said the training was a demonstration of Nigeria Customs Service Management commitment to continuous capacity building for enhanced productivity.
He urged the beneficiaries to forget the past, where they could hide under senior officers adding that they would be more accountable for whatever action they were identified with.
Speaking earlier, one of the trainees and moderator of the opening ceremony, Assistant Comptroller Abubakar Usman, described the training as a necessity for optimum performance in a command like Apapa.
