APM Terminals Apapa, Nigeria’s largest container terminal, has awarded scholarships to 45 undergraduate students from its host community, Apapa, reinforcing its commitment to education and youth development.
The beneficiaries, studying in public universities across Nigeria, were celebrated at a ceremony in Lagos on Tuesday. In addition, scholarships were granted to the children of five frontline employees of the company.
Speaking at the event, Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen reaffirmed APM Terminals Apapa’s dedication to creating lasting social impact, emphasizing the company’s belief in education as a catalyst for progress.
“Today, we are supporting 45 students, but our vision is to expand this number to over 250 within the next 4-5 years. Education is the foundation of the future, and we are proud to contribute to shaping the next generation of leaders,” Knudsen said.
Beyond scholarships, APM Terminals Apapa has a history of investing in education within its host community. This includes the renovation and upgrading of Randle Secondary School, Apapa, equipping it with modern facilities to enhance learning.
Additionally, Knudsen revealed plans to launch a technical training program for female mechanics in partnership with the Lady Mechanic Initiative, a non-governmental organization focused on empowering women with professional skills.
Uzoma Ben-Ude, Head of People Function at APM Terminals Nigeria, encouraged the scholarship recipients to embrace excellence, resilience, and hard work.
Senior People Business Partner and Scholarship Program Lead, Omolara Olatunbosun, described the selection process as highly competitive, with over 150 applicants. She commended the recipients for their determination and perseverance.
The Chairman of Apapa Local Government, Hon. Idowu Senbanjo, lauded APM Terminals Apapa’s initiative and urged other corporate entities to follow suit. Similarly, Maxwell Maduakolam, representing the Port Manager of Lagos Port Complex Apapa, applauded the company’s commitment to education.
Some scholarship recipients expressed profound gratitude, describing the initiative as transformative. Ebuwa Ekin-noma Blessing called it a life-changing opportunity, while Lagos State University student Ige Akindenuola highlighted its potential to create a ripple effect in their communities.
