Importers Turn RoRo Port Into A Dumping Ground

As importation of vehicles into the country attracts more people, large number of the rickety vehicles now find their ways to some terminals at the port. Buses, salon cars, trucks and trailers are some of vehicles spotted at the Five Star Logistic Terminal in Lagos awaiting clearance.
The ever- busy terminal however receives a high volume of ‘accidental vehicles’. With this development agents at the port are putting the blame on the importers of such items.

An agent who said importation of used items into the country has been in existence ever since and the issue of importing vehicles with bad condition is not new. Mr.Ifeanyi Chikwe said as a means to survive in this country, importers can bring anything into the country apart from vehicles with the purpose of making profit. He said in Nigeria that Most of the vehicles on the roads are accidental oversea before imported.
Speaking with an insider, who prefer anonymity ,said the various terminals that handles vehicular importations has similar express for the past six or seven days for now and with this situation the importers are to be held responsible as it giving the country a bad image. To him ,it depict that Nigerians are suffering ,that the people of the country cannot afford to by a new vehicles .He further added that some these bad vehicles will favour some set of people in the country. He affirmed that artisans and spare part dealers will all benefit from the importation of rickety vehicles as it will give their business a boost as the automobile engineer will do some repair to some of the bad vehicles whilst the traders like the spare part dealers will make goods sales from that part.
He advised that the government should put in place a policy that will be able to favour company that sales new vehicles as the rate of Tokunboh importation is high and if it goes like for the next five years Nigeria would be a dumping ground.
