The Lagos State Government has announced plans to officially launch the Omi Eko Project, a landmark initiative aimed at transforming water transportation in Africa’s largest megacity. The launch, scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2025, will take place at the Five Cowries Terminal, Falomo, under the coordination of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).
According to a statement issued by LASWA on Wednesday, the event will begin at 10:00 AM and is expected to draw top government officials, development partners, community leaders, transport stakeholders, and members of the press. The ceremony will feature keynote speeches, a virtual project presentation, and the official unveiling of the Omi Eko Project by the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Described as a pivotal step in Lagos’s journey toward sustainable urban mobility, the Omi Eko Project will introduce over 78 high-capacity electric ferries, digital ticketing systems, intelligent terminals, and modern safety innovations. The project, LASWA noted, is designed to drastically cut commute times, enhance efficiency, and promote environmentally friendly transport solutions across the state’s waterways.
“The Omi Eko Project is poised to revolutionize Lagos’s water transportation landscape by integrating innovative technology, strengthening terminal infrastructure, and championing environmental sustainability,” the statement read.
The Five Cowries Terminal, chosen as the venue for the event, serves as a major intermodal transport hub linking land and water routes in Lagos. LASWA said the terminal’s symbolic role in connecting various modes of transport aligns with the Lagos Urban Mobility Plan, which emphasizes the integration of safe, efficient, and sustainable transport systems.
The statement further noted that press kits and interview opportunities will be available at the event venue to facilitate media coverage of the historic launch.
With the Omi Eko Project, the Lagos State Government aims to consolidate its vision of a smarter, greener, and more connected city where water transportation becomes a key pillar of urban mobility and economic growth.
