The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has been thrown into mourning following the death of one of its senior leaders, Comrade Taofeek Dabiri, who until his passing served as Deputy President-General (DPG) under the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) branch of the union.
In a press statement issued by the union’s Head of Media, John Kennedy Ikemefuna, the leadership of MWUN, under its
President-General, Francis Bunu Abi, described Dabiri’s death as a painful and significant loss to the maritime labour community.
According to the statement, the late Dabiri was widely admired within the union for his warm personality, humility, and deep sense of camaraderie. He was portrayed as a “jolly good fellow” whose lifestyle and interactions transcended ethnic boundaries, earning him admiration across diverse groups within and outside the union.
Colleagues recalled that Dabiri’s distinctive presence and approachable nature often made him the center of attention at gatherings. His simplicity in dressing and easy-going demeanor reportedly led many to mistakenly associate him with regions outside his origin, reflecting his ability to blend seamlessly across cultural lines.
Union members described him as a man of dignity and discipline, who commanded respect through exemplary conduct and good manners rather than authority. His respectful disposition, regardless of rank or status, endeared him to both senior and junior colleagues alike.
The statement further highlighted Dabiri’s rare personal qualities, noting that his ability to foster strong relationships within the union made him a beloved figure. His presence, it added, often brought a sense of positivity and unity to any gathering.
Reacting to the loss, MWUN President-General, Francis Bunu Abi, was said to be deeply affected, describing the late Dabiri as one of his most reliable and trusted allies. The labour leader reportedly struggled to contain his emotions, reflecting on the vacuum created by Dabiri’s sudden departure.
Bunu, a prominent maritime labour activist and reform advocate, paid glowing tribute to the deceased, describing him as “a man of honour” who was always dependable and responsive to calls of duty. He added that Dabiri’s exemplary life and contributions to the union would remain indelible in the memories of MWUN members for years to come.
Offering prayers for the departed, the union leader sought divine mercy for Dabiri, praying that Almighty Allah grants him Aljannah (eternal rest). He also extended prayers for strength and comfort to the family he left behind.
The union emphasized that despite his passing, Dabiri’s legacy would continue to resonate within the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria as it carries on its activities.
