MWUN Mourns Loss of Maritime Icon, Ayo Ohiwereh

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced the passing of Com. Ayo Ohiwereh, a respected dockworker and a key figure in the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), where he served as Maritime Officer for Africa.

MWUN, under the leadership of Com. Adeyanju Adewale, in a statement issued on Friday expressed deep sorrow over Ohiwereh’s sudden demise, describing him as a visionary leader dedicated to the welfare of dockworkers and seafarers across Africa.

Ohiwereh passed away in the early hours of Friday, February 21, 2025, while in Nigeria for official duties. He had recently arrived from London, United Kingdom, where he was based, to continue his work with the ITF, particularly on projects concerning the Maritime Affiliate Scheme (MAS) in Nigeria. Recognized for his instrumental role in the MAS Project, Ohiwereh was at the forefront of improving collective bargaining agreements to align with international standards. His efforts significantly enhanced the integration of the West African transport sector, with a particular focus on improving dockworkers’ welfare and promoting ITF Coordinating Committees (NCC) across Africa.

Hailing from Etsako Local Government Area in Edo State, Ohiwereh was widely regarded as an expert in maritime administration. The Union noted that his extensive knowledge of the global maritime industry and numerous achievements in the sector earned him a reputation as a transformative figure.

MWUN described him as a change-maker and a shining example of vision and dedication, emphasizing that his influence extended far beyond Nigeria.

Ohiwereh’s contributions to the maritime industry were not limited to Africa, as he worked across continents advocating for the rights and welfare of transport workers. His leadership and advocacy played a critical role in shaping labor policies and improving working conditions for maritime professionals worldwide. His command of English, often described as impeccable “Queen’s English,” made him a captivating speaker who commanded great influence. Fondly referred to as a “Whiteman in black skin,” he was known for his eloquence and ability to unite people through dialogue.

MWUN expressed profound grief over Ohiwereh’s passing, describing it as a monumental loss to the global maritime community. The union noted that his milk of kindness and love for humanity would be sorely missed, adding that his death creates a vacuum that will be difficult to fill. As the maritime sector mourns the loss of one of its finest advocates, Ohiwereh’s legacy will live on through the countless reforms and initiatives he championed for the betterment of workers in the industry. MWUN has called on stakeholders to honour his memory by continuing the fight for improved conditions for dockworkers and seafarers.
