NGX Closes Week on Bearish Note as Market Capitalisation Hits ₦91.5trn

Trading activities on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) closed lower on Friday, August 15, 2025, as key performance indicators declined, with the benchmark All-Share Index (ASI) shedding 0.46% to settle at 144,628.20 points.

At the close of the last trading day of the week, investors exchanged 1.37 billion shares worth ₦13.92 billion in 32,057 deals. This represented a 44% drop in volume, 37% decline in turnover, and 26% fall in deals compared to Thursday’s session. Market capitalisation stood at ₦91.5 trillion.

A total of 129 listed equities participated in the day’s transactions, with 30 gainers and 39 losers. Mutual Benefits Assurance led the gainers’ chart with a 10% rise to ₦3.85 per share, followed by Ikeja Hotel (+9.95%), Wema Bank (+9.9%), and Deap Capital Management & Trust (+9.52%). On the flip side, Lasaco Assurance topped the losers’ list with a 10% drop to ₦4.05 per share, alongside International Energy Insurance (-10%), Linkage Assurance (-10%), and N.E.M. Insurance Company (-9.97%).

In terms of volume, Universal Insurance Company led with 309 million shares, followed by Aiico Insurance (118 million), Mutual Benefits Assurance (102 million), and Veritas Kapital Assurance (70.4 million).

Market sector performance was mixed. The NGX Banking Index gained 0.56% on the day but recorded a 0.23% loss for the week, while still boasting a robust 47.81% year-to-date gain. The NGX Industrial Index was flat, the NGX Oil & Gas Index shed 0.05%, and the NGX Pension Index fell 0.11%. The NGX Top 30 Index lost 0.34%, and the NGX Main Board Index declined by 0.19%.

On a broader note, the market closed the week with a 0.77% loss despite posting a 9.91% gain over the past four weeks and an impressive 40.52% year-to-date increase.
