In a bid to ensure the safety of Nigeria’s inland waterways, the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, has signed a performance bond with the agency’s General Managers and Area Managers.
The agreement underscores NIWA’s zero-tolerance stance on boat mishaps and reinforces its commitment to strict enforcement of safety regulations across the nation’s waterways.
The performance bond, signed during the recently concluded NIWA Retreat 2025, signifies a heightened effort to improve operational efficiency and prevent accidents on the waterways.
Speaking at the event, the NIWA Managing Director, Mr. Oyebamiji emphasized the critical need for accountability and proactive measures in achieving safer navigation and protecting lives.
As part of these efforts, the NIWA MD also inaugurated an Emergency Response Committee, a team dedicated to swift interventions in the event of maritime incidents. The committee will collaborate with key stakeholders to implement rapid response strategies and mitigate risks.
“With this performance bond, we are placing safety at the forefront of our operations. It is a clear message to all managers that accountability is non-negotiable,” Oyebamiji said.
The initiative highlights NIWA’s unwavering resolve to foster a culture of safety and efficiency, aligning with its broader goal of sustainable development and increased trust in Nigeria’s inland waterways system.
