The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has recorded another breakthrough in its crackdown on railway vandalism, with arrest and prosecution of a suspected track vandal in Lagos.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, NRC, Dr Kayode Opeifa, said this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

Opeifa noted that the 32-year-old suspect was arrested on Thursday by Multi Eye Security Services at Mobolaji Johnson Train Station, Ebute-Metta, during patrol.

“He was caught in possession of 15 pandrol clips believed to have been unlawfully removed from the narrow gauge corridor at Alagomeji.

“These components are critical to track stability, and their removal poses serious safety risks, including potential derailment,” Opeifa said.

He said following arrest, the suspect was handed to the Nigerian Railway Police Command for investigation and prosecution.

Subsequently, he was arraigned before a competent court in Lagos and remanded at Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending hearing.

The case has been adjourned to April 24.

Opeifa reiterated the corporation’s zero tolerance for vandalism, describing such acts as economic sabotage endangering lives and infrastructure.

He commended the security personnel for their vigilance and swift response.

“Anyone found culpable in vandalising railway infrastructure or dealing in stolen materials will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

NRC called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around railway corridors.

The corporation also reassures passengers and stakeholders of its commitment to safe, secure and efficient rail operations across the country.
