NUPENG Strike In Rivers State, Collapses Economic Activities

Following the clash between Petroleum Tankers Divers and TIMA – RIV (a Rivers State Government-owned transport agency), the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) strike in the state has paralyzed economic activities.
The strike which lasted throughout last week has collapsed economic activities in Rivers State.
Our investigation reveals that trouble started when overzealous TIMA – RIV staff moved against the Petroleum Tanker Drivers, destroying their tyres and batteries.

Following the clash between Petroleum Tankers Divers and TIMA – RIV (a Rivers State Government-owned transport agency), the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) strike in the state has paralyzed economic activities.
The strike which lasted throughout last week has collapsed economic activities in Rivers State.
Our investigation reveals that trouble started when overzealous TIMA – RIV staff moved against the Petroleum Tanker Drivers, destroying their tyres and batteries.
The action sparked – off instant conflict, causing NUPENG to call its members out on strike and also called on the state government to intervene.
Our investigations revealed that the suspension of petroleum product supplies has led to product scarcity in the metropolis.
Several filling stations in Port Harcourt had dry tanks, and there were no longer  sales of the product.
At the few filling stations where the products are sold, it was at a very high price. Several roads in Port Harcourt were scanty as few vehicles are seen on the roads.
Commuters and passengers in the Port Harcourt metropolis are stranded as few commercial vehicles plying the road charge exorbitant fares.
Already Port Harcourt residents have cried out to Gov Ameachi to address the incessant harassment by TIMA – RIV, urging them to expedite action to resolve the problem.
Contacted for comments, the former Chairman of Port Harcourt Zone of NUPENG ( names withheld) said there is no going back unless the demands of aggrieved tanker drivers are met.
He observed that resumption of loading by its members is dependent on replacement of damaged tankers by Rivers State government.
