Oluyinka Onigbinde, Assistant Editor of Shipping Position Daily, has emerged as the newly-elected President of the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), following a keenly-contested election held during the association’s elective congress.
Onigbinde defeated veteran maritime journalist, Reverend John Iwori, by a margin of seven votes to clinch the presidency of the association.
Yinka Onigbinde polled 20 votes while John Iwori polled only 13 votes out of a total of 33 votes.
The election, which witnessed active participation by members of the association, also produced other executive officers who will pilot the affairs of MARAN for the next tenure.
Emerging unopposed as Vice President was Obasi Sylvanus, while Fabian Anawo was elected as General Secretary.
Also elected into the executive council was Ojelabi Amina as Assistant General Secretary, while Ayanfeoluwa Providence emerged as the Public Relations Officer (PRO).
Similarly, Ruth Umuna was elected Treasurer, while Ambrose Okehi emerged unopposed as Financial Secretary.
The newly-elected executives are expected to steer the affairs of the maritime journalists’ body and promote professionalism, welfare, and unity among members of the association.
