The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, has called for stricter enforcement of safety measures on Nigerian waterways, following a tragic boat accident on the River Benue that claimed multiple lives on December 15.
The accident involved a wooden boat carrying about 80 passengers, which capsized while en route from Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State to Odenyi in Nasarawa State.
In a statement signed by the Head, Press & Public Relations of the Ministry, Muhammad Tahir Zakari,he noted that Mr Oyetola expressed profound sorrow over the accident.
The passengers, mostly traders returning from the Ocholonya Market in Benue, were victims of a preventable tragedy attributed to excessive speed and overloading, according to eyewitness reports.
Reacting to the incident, Oyetola emphasized the need for stricter safety measures on Nigerian waterways. He highlighted the critical role of boat operators, state governments, and community leaders in ensuring safety compliance.
“This incident underscores the need for heightened caution by boat operators and users. Stricter adherence to safety protocols is not negotiable,” the Minister stated, urging collaboration between the Ministry, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and local authorities to prevent similar tragedies.
The Minister also pointed out that NIWA’s operational guidelines mandate the use of life jackets and prohibit overloading. He advocated for penalties against those who neglect these safety standards, stressing that the protection of lives and property is paramount.
“Negligent parties who risk lives must face fines or prosecution according to the law,” Oyetola stated.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations revealed that the ill-fated boat was owned by Mr. Abubakar Muhammed and powered by an outboard engine. The boat capsized due to excessive speed and overloading, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations.
The Minister urged all stakeholders to prioritize the safety of waterway users by adhering to established safety measures and promoting awareness campaigns. He called for collective efforts to stem the tide of boat accidents in the country.
