The Ports Authority Police (Western) Command has emphasised the need for electoral violence prevention and strict adherence to road safety regulations during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Apapa as part of activities marking the 2026 Police Week.
The engagement, held on Tuesday, focused on the prevention of electoral violence and the promotion of road safety and traffic compliance within and around the port environment.
Addressing participants, the Commissioner of Police, Ports Authority Police (Western) Command, Oluwatoyin Iyabode Agbaminoja, stressed the need for peaceful conduct before, during, and after elections. She cautioned against involvement in electoral offences such as ballot box snatching, voter intimidation, and thuggery, noting that such actions could undermine the country’s democratic process.
The police boss urged maritime workers, freight forwarders, truck drivers, motor boys, and union leaders to sensitize their members and ensure they are not used as instruments of violence.
Beyond electoral issues, the Command also sensitized participants on road safety practices, highlighting the importance of adherence to traffic regulations and the dangers associated with drug abuse among drivers.
Particular attention was drawn to the hazardous practice of motor boys sleeping under trucks, which, according to the Command, has led to avoidable injuries and fatalities. Drivers and transport operators were advised to make use of designated truck parks, maintain proper parking habits, and comply strictly with safety regulations.
Agbaminoja reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to working closely with stakeholders to ensure safety, security, and orderliness within the port corridor.
She warned that anyone found engaging in electoral violence, traffic violations, or any act that endangers public safety would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The Ports Authority Police (Western) Command reiterated its resolve to maintain peace, protect lives and property, and ensure the smooth flow of port operations without disruption.
