The Nigerian Shippers Association, Delta State branch, has decried the excessive demurrage being paid by its members at seaports.
The body lamented the wrong calculation of detention charges borne by terminal operators and shipping lines, saying they were adding to the cost of doing business in the country.
This came to the fore at the recent inauguration of the new executive members of the state branch of the association in Warri, Delta state capital.

This came to the fore at the recent inauguration of the new executive members of the state branch of the association in Warri, Delta state capital.
At the ceremony the Zonal Coordinator, South-South, Mr. Maurice Effanga, who represented the National President, urged members to form a common front to tackle the problem.
He said the idea of the presence of the association in different zones was to make the group stronger and vibrant to meet the expectation of its members.
“We are aware of your challenges, but we will continue to ensure that shippers operate in a conducive environment for the importation and exportation of cargoes,” Effanga said.
He also spoke on the need for the association to embark on an aggressive enlightenment campaign for shippers in the country, noted that it would provide a platform to resolve common problems.
