Chidori Ship Holding LLC as owners and NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd as managers of the container vessel ONE Apus (IMO# 9806079) can now confirm the contents of the estimated 64 Dangerous Goods containers, which were among 1,816 units lost overboard after the vessel encountered severe weather on Monday, November 30, 2020,
54 of the DG containers carry fireworks whilst a further eight hold batteries, and two contain liquid ethanol. A notification was sent to the JRCC in Honolulu and Guam with maritime navigational warnings subsequently broadcast. We are continuing to liaise with the JRCC in Honolulu, who has advised that there have not been sightings of any containers as yet.
The vessel is cautiously proceeding to the port of Kobe, Japan with an ETB of 1200LT on December 8, subject to all operations proceeding as planned. The priority remains on getting the ship and crew safely to port. Once berthed, it’s expected to take some time to offload the dislodged containers that remain on board. Then, a thorough assessment will be made on the exact number and type of containers that have been lost or damaged.
Once the ONE Apus is in port and deemed safe, a full investigation will be conducted into this incident in conjunction with the Flag State and the relevant maritime authorities.

Up To 200 Containers Lost By Mega Container Ship In North Sea UPDATE Maersk Ruled Out
MAERSK refuted reports with regards to containers lost allegedly, by container ship MUNICH MAERSK on Dec 2. Ship’s slow moving is explained by the necessity to fit into schedule. Indeed, lack of any image/video of the ship after her arrival at Gothenburg is a proof in itself, dozens or hundreds of lost containers imply collapsed stacks and other visible leftovers of an accident, so if there was an accident, images would already leak into social nets, media, etc. So the story remains a mystery, with, understood, German and Dutch CG and maritime authorities continuing search for probable containers loss. Fishermen were the ones who reported probable containers loss, after their sonar spotted underwater at least four objects.
Dec 9: Some 200 containers are believed to be lost by container ship north of Schiermonnikoog island, Wadden Islands, North sea. Containers were first spotted by Dutch fishermen, later Dutch CG Command confirmed fishermen report. Containers are believed to be lost by Ultra Large Container Vessel MUNICH MAERSK on Dec 2, some 90 nm north of Schiermonnikoog island. Ship’s track backs the suspicion – the ship left Bremerhaven in the afternoon Dec 2, bound for Gothenburg Sweden, gathered way to her cruising speed, but several hours later reduced speed to full stop or dead ahead, and kept limping in northern direction until afternoon Dec 3, when she resumed voyage, but at a reduced speed.
The ship docked at Gothenburg on Dec 5, left on Dec 8, bound for Aarhus Denmark, ETA Dec 9.
The report isn’t yet officially confirmed, with regards to ship’s ID and number of lost containers.
Giant container ships are too dangerous in at least two aspects – enormous momentum created by rolling and pitching in rough weather smashes and breaks all lashings and locks, there’s no technology to hold on against such force; in case of major fire effective targeted firefighting is impossible.
