Maritime Academy, Oron Plans To Acquire Ship

The Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) in Oron, Akwa Ibom, says it has concluded plans to acquire a 300-man capacity ship to train cadets of the institution.
Rector of the institution;  Mr Joshua Okpo, disclosed this yesterday  when members of the Akwa Ibom Council of Correspondents Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) visited him.
He said that his mission at the academy was to train world-class professionals for the maritime sector of the economy.

Rector of the institution;  Mr Joshua Okpo, disclosed this yesterday  when members of the Akwa Ibom Council of Correspondents Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) visited him.
He said that his mission at the academy was to train world-class professionals for the maritime sector of the economy.
Okpo said that his administration was striving to provide adequate infrastructure to position the institution as an ideal academic community.
According to him, the academy has achieved 24-hour electricity supply and constant supply of potable water.
He said that the institution had embarked on expansion of facilities which included development of staff housing estate, standard swimming pool, market and places of worship.
“Our staff welfare scheme is very robust and decisions on staff matters are usually taken collectively for the benefit of all persons,” Okpo said.
 “The good thing about improvement in infrastructure is that the academy has dual accreditation from National Board for Technical Education and International Maritime Organisation.
“We have paid the required fees and signed Memorandum of Understanding with a maritime institution in Turkey to provide sea time training for our cadets, every year,” he said.
The rector said that the academy’s relationship with the host community had improved, stressing that no meaningful development could be achieved without peace.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel, Mr Inemesit Akpan-Nsoh, had commended the rector for the improvement of infrastructure in the academy.
Akpan-Isoh also lauded the efforts of the management in fostering peace and harmony between its workforce and the host community.
He also appealed to the management to collaborate with the media to project activities of the academy, especially as the institution was in the threshold of transforming into a university.
