The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has decried lack of public transportation system in the country.
This is coming few weeks after the partial relaxation of the lockdown. especially in Lagos State due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Acting Executive Director of CILT, Mr. Paul Ndibe who said this in a chat with Shipping Position Daily on Tuesday, added that 99% of transportation system in Nigeria are in the hands of the private sector.
Ndibe, however added that the private sector practitioners have not been properly enabled to continue with the risk level.
"There is absence of a public transportation system, there is also an absence of a physical distribution system in Nigeria, all these things are 90% in the hands of the private sector and the private sector participants have not been enabled to continue with the risk level in doing all these things"
Ndibe however charged the government to come up with a clean transport policy that will entrench public transportation system both for passengers and also the physical distribution of good.
"So moving forward, the government has now seen the need or the essence of logistics, and transport. So the government has to go back and talk with the professionals and draw a clean transport policy that can entrench public transportation system both for passengers and also the physical distribution system of the goods"
Ndibe advised that professionals in the transport industry be allowed at the key points where these policies will be implemented, if the government wants to achieve the desired results.
"They should also place professionals at key points where these things are implemented without the professionals the government may not achieved the desired milestone"
According to him, "currently in Lagos State the BRT has not been working since Monday, so I heard because the government is lacking in the supply of diesel because the earnings, returns could not be able to provide for the diesel. So if the government cannot absorb this shock, then think of the private sector and there is no palliative for to enable them offer services", he stated.
