The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has assured stakeholders in the maritime sector, especially port users that the Federal Government is working towards a holistic and sustainable rehabilitation of the roads within the ports’ community in the Lagos area and beyond in order to ensure a greater and a more efficient service delivery at the seaports.
The Managing Director of the agency, Hadiza Bala Usman who disclosed this during an interactive session with some stake holders on Friday in Lagos said, the management of NPA is also appreciative of the synergy of a consortium of private operators who are currently involved in efforts to fix the roads leading into the ports.
Present at the interactive session were: Commission for Environment Lagos State, Dr. S.B Adejare, Cantonment Commander Arakan Barracks Apapa, Brig. General PTO Aro.
The NPA Executive Director, Engineering and Technical Services Prof. Idris Abubakar led top management authority to the meeting, which also had Engineers G.C. Eke Federal Controller of Works and Engr. Mrs. O. Osakue of Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing in attendance.
According to her, all necessary variables like the enforcement of tonnage limits for trucks and the use of railway for cargo movement would be encouraged in order to actualize the quick delivery of results concerning the road rehabilitation project.
She however called on terminal operators to provide holding bays at their terminals, noting that it would help manage the traffic grid lock along the Apapa corridor.
She also advised the terminal operators to install weighing bridges in their respective terminals, stressing that machinery would soon be put in place to implement Government directives concerning weigh bridges.
The NPA MD also indicated that the trucks standardization programme of the agency would be reviewed in conjunction with the State and Federal Governments with a view to ensuring public safety on the roads.
