Two ships loaded with cargoes destined for Nigeria were involved in mishaps within 24 hours.

The first was a general cargo ship; KING 2 which on February 18 went adrift off Gythio, Laconic Gulf, Peloponnese in Greece.

It was confirmed that her engine disabled by poor quality bunker fuel. Reports says that, the ship’s “Master didn’t ask for assistance, awaiting bunker tanker to be refueled”.

As at February 19, the ship was still off Gythio, probably anchored.

The KING 2 is loaded with gypsum, and is en route from Iskenderun to Port Harcourt in Nigeria.

General cargo ship KING 2, IMO 9071167, dwt 6984, built 1993, flag Comoros, manager INDIVIDUAL SHIPPING LTD, Greece (EQUASIS).

What is interesting, is the ship’s cargo and voyage.

Before KING 2 accident, another general cargo ship; UK DIVERSITY, IMO 7359125, dwt 2753, built 1975, flag Palau had sunk on February 17 in Gulf of Sidra. She was also sailing to Nigeria.

The ship which sank in Gulf of Sidra, is also an aged freighter, even smaller than KING 2

Further details about the two accidents were not available as at press time.
