Mission To Seafarers Set To Host ‘Sea Sunday’

The sea Sunday is a day set aside for prayers all over the world to honour seafarers and others, working in the marine environment.

In an exclusive chat with the Chaplain, Mission to Seafarers in Nigeria, Venerable Mike Gbadebo told Shipping Position Daily, yesterday that the sea Sunday is a day set aside to show appreciation to the seafarers for their various contributions to the economic growth of nations.

Gbadebo noted that prayers and support for the seafarers go a long way in the quest of discharging their respective duties to their nations, adding that the seafarers are faced with enormous hindrances at sea.

According to him, here in Nigeria, “over 90% of the things we use on a daily basis, be they food, machinery, vehicles fuel etc arrive on our shore by sea".

"The seafarers who help to bring us these essentials and luxuries remain one of the most hidden group of workers in the world, despite life at sea being one of the most difficult, dangerous and challenging occupation"

"Our mission in fulfilling our mandate reaches out to all the seafarers visiting our ports with care, and our seafarers centre where facilities are provided for their benefit" the venerable stated.

He called on all local and foreign seafarers that are present in Lagos to come for prayers and a moment of joy with the Lord.
Gbadebo further stressed that, "the programme is opened to all seafarers because a seafarer is always a seafarer whether ocean going or on Nigeria shores, we are expecting all of them due to the fact that the service is meant for all of them"

"As we say, it’s a commemorative service for the purpose of praying for the seafarers and their families"

"It is going to be a special service to show appreciation and to encourage them to do more , it is a service of blessings through prayers because it is not our own efforts that they are being saved especially when you talk about seafarers and the nature of their job on the high sea where pirate attacks is on the increase", he stated.
