The Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology in Lagos has raised alarm over the high number of persons who parade themselves as either current or former students of the school and who have been using the the school’s identity to perpetrate evil.
In an exclusive chat with our correspondents at the school last week, the institution’s Provost; Dr Sule Abiodun lamented that it has received several reports of persons, especially youths who attend public functions and drop the school’s name with intent to disparage it.
The Provost spoke against the backdrop of some media reports, which quoted some persons as claiming to be cadets of the institution.
Capt Abiodun urged members of the public to verify and request for identification from anyone who claims to be either students of the school, or anyone who claim to be connected with the school in any form.
He told Shipping Position Daily last week that Federal Government-owned institution also has a large pool of qualified and competent lecturers.  He also added that the school has a strict admission procedure, which ensures that only candidates who meet its requirements are offered admission.
He however added that some crafty students were still able to beat the stiff guidelines. There are also those who were told to withdraw after the first semester examinations, because they can not cope with the rigors of the academics.
“These are the people you’ll find outside, bearing false tales of being students of the College. They leave the school because of these reasons and then wait for their mates to graduate, they collect their letters and fake it to look for placements on board ships and in other places”, he disclosed.
The Provost added that, very soon the Institution will put a disclaimer and caveat on such persons. “Anyone who claims to be a student of this school, please ask for his identity card”. Its either they don’t have or what they will show to you is fake, he told our correspondent.
On the facilities in the school, Capt Abiodun who also holds a PhD from the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, Imo State, disclosed that the school has one of the most modern facilities around.
He also added that only recently, it got a simulator; courtesy of the Federal Government. This is in addition to several other facilities, and laboratories that are currently available in the school.
Capt Abiodun told Shipping Position Daily that, in addition to these facilities, the school also has an impressive array of qualified academic staff.
He maintained that there is no way a graduate from the school can be seen in places like Liverpool in Apapa or at Takwa Bay on Lagos Island to seek jobs on canoes and boats.
