The Nigerian Shippers’ Council said yesterday that it will hold a one-day consumer consultative meeting with shippers, shipping agencies, freight forwarders, government agencies and trade groups in Aba, Abia State with the aim of creating a useful interactive platform to address certain international trade issues bothering them.

In a statement issued yesterday and sent to Shipping Position Daily, the Council said that the programme, which is expected to be attended by users of shipping services in the import and export value chain and other stakeholders in the maritime industry, will address among other things clearing of cargo at the seaports, haulage rates, port charges, cargo safety and security, port procedures and processes, port infrastructure, inspection and examination agencies at the seaports and the new port order.
The Council’s deputy director, public relations; Mr Ignatius Nweke, in the statement added that “the meeting, is one of such interactive programmes to be organized by the Nigerian Shippers' Council in the major commercial cities of the country with high concentration of shippers.”
He explained that it is aimed at reaching out to stakeholders and proffer solutions on the road map to achieving the new port order being advocated by the Council and which calls for efficiency and transparency in doing business at the ports.
Nweke stated that Port Harcourt, Rivers State recently hosted a similar forum for stakeholders in that axis. The statement added that the Northern and the Western zones would take their turns later in the year.
Shipping Position Daily also recalls that the government in 2014 pronounced the Nigerian Shippers’ Council as the ports economic regulator with the mandate to among other things restore sanity in the ports and strive towards making Nigerian Ports friendly and competitive.
