A socio-political organization known as the Benin National Congress (BNC) has kicked against recent appointments by President Umar Yar’ Adua into some oil and gas sector agencies saying that they were made to northernize the oil and gas industry.
The BNC in a statement issued in Benin and signed by its Director of Publicity and Intelligence, Mr. Blessing Igbinoba expressed surprised that appointments of a substantive Minister for the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Group Managing Director of the NNPC and key executive positions in the NNPC were all given to northerners.
Lamenting that indigenes of the South – South geopolitical zone were excluded form the lucrative appointments, the group recalled that even under the military, such appointments were never the preserve of the north. The recent appointments of a minister for petroleum and that managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), it said are like a slap on the faces of Niger Deltans and a negation of the principles of federal character.
