An Oil and Gas analyst Mr. Adeola Yussuf has urged the Federal Government to commence the implementation of the $1 billion dollars Ogoni Clean-up which has been pending for more than two years.
Recall thatVice-President Yemi Osinbajo, on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2016 motion a $1 billion clean-up and restoration programme of the Ogoniland region in the Niger Delta, announcing that financial and legislative frameworks had been put in place to begin implementing recommendations made by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Osinbajo had said that the implementation will be based on recommendations from a 2011 UNEP report, commissioned by the Nigerian government, on the impact of oil extraction in Ogoniland.
However in a recent chat with Shipping Position Daily, the oil and gas expert while speaking on his expectation for the oil and gas industry for 2020, stated that the government must show sincerity and seriousness to the Ogoni clean up stating that a number of locations public health was severely threatened by contaminated drinking water and carcinogens.
According to him "as and matter of urgency, I believe the Government should show seriousness and commitment to the Ogoni clean up.
"Because up till date we still here report of severe and widespread contamination of soil and ground water across Ogoniland.
"In a number of locations public health was severely threatened by contaminated drinking water and carcinogens. Delta ecosystems such as mangroves had been utterly devastated, so i believe government needs to take health of the ogoni people more seriously".
Among other things he called for the passage of Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) and signing of the bill into law, fabrication and completion of NLNG Train 7
"Moreso we are expecting pasage of petroleum industry bill and signing of the bill into law, i expect more discoveries from the frontier basins
"Fabrication and completion of NLNG Train 7, compelrion of upstream assets sale by Chevron, Total and ExxonMobil
Stability in crude oil price at the International market
"Discovery of more gas deposit and of course expecting the
Completion of 650,000 bpd capacity Dangote Petroleum refinery, we should also expect the removal of petrol subsidy and total deregulation of downstream sub-sector.
"We expect that government will pay more attention to pipeline security and put an end to vandalism and crude oil theft among many other things"
