Apparently reacting to the fast-spreading Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Tuesday announced the closure of its national secretariat in Apapa.
In a statement issued yesterday and signed by its President General; Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, the union said the decision to shut down was taken at the combined meeting of its National Administrative Council (NAC) and Central Working Committee (CWC).
According to the statement, “amongst the issues discussed is the recent pandemic spread of the COVID – 19 which has brought many governments to a standstill and lockdowns”.
“We note that the Federal government of Nigeria has ordered a lock down of movement of people to reduce contact and spread of the disease. Consequently, social gathering of more than twenty people at a time has been banned and such sundry methods put in place”,
According to the union, “in cognizance of Government’s directive to restrict movement of people and goods, and to further safe guide the lives of our members, we announce the closure of our national secretariat and its annex offices for the first instance of two weeks starting from the 25th March 2020”.
The MWUN however explained that, notwithstanding the shutdown, skeletal essential services will still be offered to the general public at its secretariat.
It added that, the union’s National Executive Council meeting which had been scheduled for 27th March 27, 2020 has been postponed.
……. ANLCA Too Shuts Down
Meanwhile, the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents(ANLCA) also yesterday announced the shutdown of its secretariat in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos.
The association’s National President; Mr Tony Nwabunike in a WhatsApp message that was sent to our correspondent confirmed that the association’s head office had been shut with effect from 12noon on Tuesday till further notice.
In a message which was sent to his members and which touched on the pandemic and the effect it is having globally, the ANLCA President said: “Your National President and entire NECOM members do care about you and your entire family members. All our professional colleagues are very important and dear to us. Let's show love to ourselves by staying safe and coming out victorious”.
