THISDAY newspaper’s reporter, Mr. John Iwori has been declared as the Maritime Reporter of the Year by the Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMMA).
The occasion took place in Kano, the Kano State capital. The award is endowed by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and it goes with a N25, 000 cash prize, a golden trophy of excellence and a certificate.
Iwori’s entry titled, “The Untold Story of MV Pomah” was adjudged the best among other entries for the Maritime Reporter of the Year category. The report which was published last year in THISDAY captured in graphic details the travails of passengers in a sinking ship, off the Atlantic Ocean near Bonny Island , Rivers State . The passengers and cargoes, including 63 life cows, women and children were trapped in the middle of the sea as the distress call of the Ghanaian captain moved from one search and rescue centre (SAR) to the other in the West and Central African sub-regions. The sinking ship was on its way to Tokaradi , Ghana a few days after it started sailing from Libreville , the capital Gabon .
Iwori who started his journalism career as Reporter 1 in The Tide, the Rivers State Government owned newspaper in 1996 is presently, the Transport and Maritime Editor of THISDAY.
