The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says over 216,000 people have died of COVID-19 on the African continent since the outbreak of the viral infection.
According to the Africa CDC, more than 8.4m cases of COVID-19 have also been recorded on the continent so far with over 7.8m recoveries.
The agency disclosed this in its latest update on Wednesday, noting that the continent has now recorded 8,446,503 cases and 216,035 fatalities.
The African Union health agency also stated that 7,826,853 recoveries had been recorded despite the increase in fatalities.
In the Africa CDC’s latest report, the Central African region has recorded
259,896 cases; 3,630 deaths and 238,578 recoveries while Cameroon has the highest figures with 100,289 cases; 1,600 deaths and 94,781 recoveries.
East Africa, according to the report, recorded 1,043, 115; 22,442 deaths and 861,947 recoveries with Ethiopia leading the region with 359,881 cases; 6,258 deaths and 330,334 recoveries.
In Northern Africa, there are now 2,569,716 cases; 69,406 deaths and 2,339,060 recoveries while Morocco has the highest figures with 942,779 cases; 14,566 deaths and 922,456 recoveries.
According to the report, Southern Africa has now recorded 3,915,662 cases; 110,709 deaths and 3,758,722 recoveries as South Africa is still the leading country on the continent with 2,917,255 cases; 88,674 deaths and 2,808,160 recoveries.

The Africa CDC report shows that Nigeria has the highest figures in the West African region with 209,546 cases; 2,838 deaths and 197,546 recoveries out of 658,114 cases; 9,848 deaths and 628,546 recoveries.
The World Health Organisation Regional Office for Africa recently said its multidisciplinary teams of specialists are set to be deployed to about 15 African countries.
According to WHO AFRO, they will address obstacles that are impeding the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines, to support national authorities achieve the 10 percent coverage target for all populations as soon as possible, and 40 per cent by the end of the year.
In a statement posted on its website, Immunisation and Vaccines Development Programme Coordinator for WHO AFRO, Dr. Richard Mihigo, said the team will be identifying key gaps that are negatively impacting the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in identified countries and also providing targeted support to assist these countries to optimise their rollout.
“Currently, Africa has made only modest progress in COVID-19 vaccination, with 15 countries meeting the 10 per cent vaccination target by the end of September. Countries still have a long way to go to reach the year-end target of fully vaccinating 40 per cent of their populations.
“In terms of overall COVID-19 response, many countries are struggling to optimally utilise the available resources. This situation, in the context of the broader ecosystem, will be analysed during these missions to help us reach a point where we have established continuous dialogue,” Dr. Mihigo explained.
