The House of Representatives committee on Public Accounts has accused the Nigerian Ports Authourity of tax evasion to the tune of about N70Bllion spanning between 1999 and 2009.
The committee which was actually voicing the submission of the Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru has consequently asked for a statement of defence from the NPA.
The committee which is chaired by Labaran Dambatta had before the declaration had an interactive session with the FIRS boss
Confirming that the committee was in receipt of documents and that it was ready to invite the two agencies for clarifications, Dambatta disclosed that: "we want more documents on all taxes being owed, especially by the Nigeria Port Authority which is owing the FIRS about N70Billion for the last 10 years. So we asked the FIRS to bring those documents and we will invite the NPA to tell us why they have not been able to pay that money".
Details of the alleged tax evasion were not made available to the press, but it was confirmed that the FIRS met with the law makers with the intention of making NPA to pay.
