……..Maersk Line Spearheads Freight Rate Hike on West Africa Routes

• New rates effective December 15

Global shipping service provider, Maersk Line has announced rate increases on its numerous routes to West Africa. The new freight rate is a flat $250 per TEU.

Unfolding the new rates which will take effect from December 15, 2009, the shipping line attributed the rates hike to unfavourable trading conditions for the carriers operating in the West African routes.

The routes from Europe, Asia, Far East and others to West Africa are still subject to unacceptable rate levels and the situation is unsustainable in the longer term, the company stated.

“The rate increases are necessary to continue to operate our services with the high level of reliability our customers have come to expect from Maersk Line,” it added.

The rate review is applicable to  India and Sri Lanka to West Africa, Far East to West Africa as well  Middle East (U.A.E., Oman, Qatar, Iran, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen) & South Asia (Pakistan, Bangladesh) to West Africa

The company also disclosed that the announcement also affects embers of  Asian West Africa Trade Agreement  (AWATA), whose member lines consist of China Shipping Container Line, CMA CGM, Delmas, Gold Star Line, Maersk Line, Mitsui OSK Line, Pacific International Line and Safmarine.
