A total of 249,417 metric tonnes of wheat have been confirmed to have been imported into the country through the Lagos ports in May, a clear indication of a gradual decline in importation of the commodity when compared with the figure of 284,385 metric tonnes that was recorded in April and 291,125 metric tonnes that was also recorded in March respectively.
Even with the decline in tonnage, a total of 10 vessels came into the two ports in Lagos loaded with the commodity last month.

According to statistics made available to Shipping Position Daily, by the Nigeria Port Authority, last month, Josepdam handled the highest tonnage of 119,873mt.
Previous records however revealed that for the past two months, Apapa Bulk Terminal Limited [ABTL] has been a dominant port in the importation of wheat.
According to the document, five vessels came into Josepdam terminal at Tin Can Island Port with the commodity in May, on the 23rd of May, a vessel called Apollonia sailed into the terminal with 27,000 metric tonnes of wheat, while another vessel called Storm Rider arrived with 22,127 tonnages on the 17th.
On the 10th of May, Sentosa Bulker came in with 25,000 metric tonnes of wheat; Pacific Bulker handled 26,000mt, and by the following day, a vessel called Arietta came in with a record lowest tonnage of 19,746mt.
Statistics also revealed that Apapa Bulk Terminal Limited handled 103,544 metric tonnes of wheat in the month of May as against 182,520mt that was recorded in April. The commodity came aboard four vessels.
On the 24th, Ionian Eagle came in with only 8,163mt, but on the 2nd of the same month, Desert Rhapsody had sailed in, loaded with 47,115 metric tonnes, New Legend Pearl came in with 16,500 mt of the commodity, and on May 1, Desert Moon Came in with 31,766mt
Greenview Development Nigeria Limited [GDNL] also handled a total of 26,000 metric tonnes of wheat which however came aboard the only vessel that berthed at the terminal
In April the Dangote terminal handled a total of 26,410M.T while in March it recorded it 25,700 tonnage of wheat.
It would be recalled that the federal government recently said that plans were on going to stop the importation of polished wheat into the country by 2015 in order to encourage the use of cassava and also to boost agriculture in the country.
