Speaking at the inauguration of the summit planning committee and a press briefing yesterday as part of preparations to herald the commencement of the 3rd National Transport Summit, the Chairman planning committee of this year summit, Barrister Osuala Emma Nwagbara, informed that the summit aims to examine the current state of the practice in economic, technical and safety regulation in the transport sector of Nigeria.

He said the summit will proffer different recommendations on how the country can use economic and technical regulations as veritable tools for sustainable transport development adding that for transport to be sustainable it must be affordable and safe for the people,

Speaking on the successes of the first and second summit, Nwagbara noted that CIOTA as an advocacy body that trains transporters as a professional have been able to record tremendous sucesss that can be seen in the transport sector.

He said following the advocacy of the body last year barge operations and rail have come to fore as the over reliance on road transport have reduce drastically.

He said “You cannot talk about sustainable transport without talking about regulation which we are focusing on this year, but you will agree that there have been developments that have been driven by the advocacy of CIOTA as a fall out of the two main summit we have had, I am sure you have seen a lot of developments in the rail sector, I am sure you have also notice a lot of development even in the maritime sector that we are in, today we talk about barging operations and safety don’t forget that this year summit will be looking at regulation which will focus on safety pricing and secured transport so technical regulation, economic regulation is what this year is talking about.

“You could see that since our last summit from the end of last year to the present barging operations have been brought to the fore through the advocacy of CIOTA.
